Top 10 Ways to Detox Your Kitchen the CSDS Way
Girl-
You know that your kitchen is the heart of your home, but it can also be a hidden source of toxins that impact your health. At CSDS, we believe in creating beautiful, low-tox spaces, and your kitchen should be no exception. Here are the top ways to detox your kitchen and make it a healthier place for you and your family.
1. Filter Your Water
Tap water can contain chlorine, lead, and other harmful contaminants. Install a water filter - Clearly Filtered is my favorite (use my discount link!) to ensure you're drinking and cooking with the cleanest water possible. Clean water is foundational to your health!
2. Switch to Non-Toxic Dish Soap
Conventional dish soaps often contain dyes, synthetic fragrances, and harsh chemicals. Opt for a non-toxic dish soap that’s free from harmful ingredients and better for both your skin and the environment.
3. Ditch Non-Stick Pans
Non-stick pans may seem convenient, but they often contain PFOAs and PFAS, chemicals linked to health risks such as hormone disruption and cancer. Switch to healthier cookware options like ceramic, stainless steel, or cast iron to avoid exposure to these toxins.
4. Buy Organic When Possible
Make an effort to buy organic produce, especially items on the Dirty Dozen list (check out the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) website for the latest list). Non-organic produce is often treated with pesticides like glyphosate, which is linked to cancer and other health issues. Opt for grass-fed beef and pasture-raised chicken and eggs, and shop local whenever possible for healthier, hormone-free meat and dairy.
5. Swap Plastic for Safer Storage Options
Plastic containers, bags, and wraps can leach harmful chemicals into your food, especially when heated. Ditch plastic and switch to silicone bags, beeswax wrap, or glass storage containers. These eco-friendly options keep your food safe and reduce your environmental footprint.
6. Avoid Aluminum Foil and Bleached Parchment Paper
Aluminum can leach into your food, and bleached parchment paper may contain toxins. Swap aluminum foil for unbleached parchment paper to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals while cooking or baking.
7. Use Non-Toxic Hand Soap
Your hands touch everything, so it’s important to use a safe, non-toxic hand soap. Look for soaps free from dyes, carcinogenic chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and ethoxylated ingredients. Better yet, try making your own with liquid castile soap for a truly clean solution!
8. Start Composting Your Food Scraps
Turn your food scraps into nutrient-rich soil by starting a compost! Composting is a great way to reduce waste and nourish your garden, whether it’s big or small. You can invest in a composting bin, or make your own by using a metal trash can with drilled holes for aeration. Add fruit and veggie scraps, mix in organic soil, and turn it regularly to produce rich soil for your garden. Bonus: Add grass clippings or leaves to speed up the process!
9. Use Safer Cleaning Products
Toxic, chemical-filled cleaning products can leave harmful residues in your kitchen. Swap them out for safer alternatives like MamaSuds All-Purpose cleaner (link gets you 10% off) or homemade cleaners made with white vinegar and baking soda - these options clean your surfaces without exposing you to harsh chemicals. If you really need a disinfectant, try Force of Nature, an all-natural and an EPA hospital registered disinfectant ((use link + code BUNDLESAVINGS for an extra 40% off bundles)
10. Shop Local and Organic for Meat, Eggs, and Dairy
Whenever possible, support local farmers by purchasing grass-fed, pasture-raised, organic meat and eggs. Not only does this support ethical farming practices, but it also ensures that you're eating products free from hormones, antibiotics, and other harmful chemicals.
